the procedure

How Does It Work?

The Intragastric Balloon (IGB) is a soft balloon filled with fluid or air that creates a feeling of fullness by inducing intermittent mechanical pseudo-obstruction and volume restriction in the stomach.

This leads to delayed gastric emptying and early satiety, making it easier to manage portion sizes and develop healthier eating habits.

Depending on the type of balloon used, it can remain in the stomach for 6 to 12 months.

Frequently asked questions

1. What is the recovery like after the intragastric balloon (IGB) placement?

keyboard_arrow_down

We usually have our patients go home the same day as the procedure, and they can return to their normal activities as tolerated the following day. Though nausea or abdominal discomfort are expected after balloon placement, you will have a special medication and dietary regimen to follow for several weeks after the procedure, which ensures you feel well and continue on your path to a healthier weight.

2. What sort of follow-up will I have?

keyboard_arrow_down

We take pride in the follow-up care we provide to our patients at IMCEB and BEM. We believe that the most important aspect of our job extends beyond your procedure with us; rather, we aim to be a key partner in your journey to well-being.

Our well-established and internationally recognized follow-up program and care team set us apart, and you will have scheduled visits over the course of a year.

3. What happens to my weight after the balloon is removed?

keyboard_arrow_down

Although one of our goals is to help you develop healthy habits that promote weight loss and overall well-being, you may gain weight after the balloon is removed. We typically combine antiobesity medications (AOM) to minimize this, but we will collaborate with you to be a partner in your health.

4. How does the intragastric balloon compare to the endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG +WL®)?

keyboard_arrow_down

Although both procedures are safe and effective tools for weight loss and treating metabolic diseases, studies have indicated that endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG +WL® ) results in more significant and sustainable weight loss.

At the Instituto Mexicano de Cirugía Endoscópica y Bariátrica (IMCEB) and Bariatric Endoscopy of Mexico (BEM), we will assist you in selecting and personalizing the best therapy to achieve a healthier weight and enhance your well-being.

5. Why should I choose IMCEB (Instituto Mexicano de Cirugía Endoscópica y Bariátrica) and Bariatric Endoscopy of Mexico (BEM) for my procedure?
