Frequently asked questions
1. How does endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG +WL®) compare to laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy?
Recent studies have shown that ESG induces similar weight loss compared to traditional sleeve gastrectomy. Additionally, it is a less invasive procedure that is scar-free and has a lower risk of complications compared to laparoscopic surgical sleeve procedures.
2. How long does endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty last?
At IMCEB and BEM, we strictly adhere to best practices for endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), setting us apart from any other institution or practice in Mexico.
We typically spend at least one hour ensuring that we provide you with sufficient sutures (at least 5-6, based on best practice international guidelines), which guarantees that you will have a high-quality, durable, and safe procedure.
3. What should I expect during the procedure?
This outpatient procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Patients typically experience some minor abdominal discomfort and nausea, which are usually well managed with the medications prescribed after the procedure.
4. What is the recovery like after ESG +WL®?
We usually have our patients go home the same day as the procedure, and they can return to their normal activities as tolerated the following day. You will have a special medication and dietary regimen to follow for several weeks after the procedure, which ensures you feel well and continue on your path to a healthier weight.
5. What sort of follow-up will I have?
We take pride in the follow-up care we provide to our patients at IMCEB and BEM. We believe that the most important aspect of our job extends beyond your procedure with us; rather, we aim to be a key partner in your journey to well-being.
Our well-established and internationally recognized follow-up program and care team set us apart, and you will have scheduled visits over the course of a year.
6. Is the ESG +WL® procedure covered by insurance?
Although endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG +WL®) is a mature, well-established, safe, and effective endoscopic procedure, it is not covered by insurance. We do, however, offer financing options.
7. Why should I choose Instituto Mexicano de Cirugía Endoscópica y Bariátrica (IMCEB; Mexican Institute for Bariatric and Surgical Endoscopy) and Bariatric Endoscopy of Mexico (BEM) for my procedure?
Dr. Sánchez-Luna is a trailblazer in bariatric, metabolic, and surgical endoscopy in Mexico. He is the Founder and CEO of both IMCEB and BEM, and the only physician in Mexico and Latin America triple-board certified in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Obesity Medicine by U.S. boards. He also holds full medical licensure in Mexico to practice Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Interventional Endoscopy.
With a career dedicated to transformative care, Dr. Sánchez-Luna has successfully treated over 11,000 patients.
